FORMULARY:
Metronidazole (M, J): Giardia lamblia, Clostridium species, Bacterioides species
*Doxycycline (M, J): Malaria, cholera (Vibrio cholerae), plague (Yersinia pestis), various Gram positive and Gram negative organisms, various rare zoonotic infections (i.e. Tularemia)
Amoxicillin (with Clavulanate) (M, J): Many Gram positive organisms (nearly all Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species), Salmonella, anthrax (Bacillus anthracis), Hemophilus species
**Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (M): Streptococcus pnemuoniae, Hemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli (including heavy-hitting enterotoxigenic and enteroinvasive strains), Shigella species, most Gram negative organisms which cause urinary tract infections, cholera, plague
Ciprofloxacin (M, J): Some infectious agents which cause meningitis (e.g. Neisseria meningitidis), Pseudomonas aeriginosa, Gram negative gasteroenteritis-causing organisms (e.g. Escherichia, Salmonella, and Shigella species), many pneumonia-causing Gram negative and Gram positive organisms (e.g. Klebsiella species), anthrax, cholera
Azithromycin (J): Similar profile to Trimethoprim-sulfamethoaxazole except less urinary tract infection coverage and more coverage of Gram positive organisms that infect respiratory tract and skin, unclear effects on cholera and plague
Third-generation cephalosporins (e.g. cefixime): Multiple Gram positive and Gram negative organisms which cause upper respiratory tract and urinary tract infections
Albendazole: Neurocysticercosis (!), hydatid disease, filariasis, Giardia lamblia, flukes, most gastrointestinal worms, other rare helminthic infections
Fluconazole: Candida species (oropharyngeal and vaginal candidiasis), Histoplasmosis, Blastomycosis, Coccioidomycosis, Cryptococcus, most skin fungal infections
*Frequently prescribed for prophylaxis (prevention) of malaria.
**Frequently prescribed for prophylaxis (prevention) of traveler's diarrhea due to E. coli infection.
