The Vatican Apostolic Archive, formerly known as the Vatican Secret Archive, is the principal depository of all acts issued by the Holy See in Vatican City. As the ruler of Vatican City, the pope owns the material in the archive until his death or resignation, at which point ownership passes to his successor.
