Making French Vanilla Soap

French vanilla soap is a highly requested soap in our shop. As a soapmaker I always want to make really pretty bars with lots of swirls or colors. The problem with that is when you use a fragrance like french vanilla it has a high vanalin content. Vanalin, if you don't know already, will turn your soap brown. No matter how much colorant you add to it, a high vanalin content will make your colors muddy looking and eventually they'll turn brown. There are ways to get around this. You can leave part of the batter unscented and add color to that, or you can add a vanalin stabilizer to your batter, but frankly I don't know what is in a vanalin stabilizer and I've heard they don't always work as well as you'd like them to. So, I have learned to embrace the brown. I actaully love watching the soap change colors over time. From a creamy yellow to a dark brown. It's almost like putting a mood ring on your finger and watching the stone change- but much, much slower. Anyway, you can see the end result of the high vanalin content at the end of this video.
