Arctic Agriculture: Growing Vegetables in Subfreezing Conditions
Does -30C allow for the growth of food? A little over 2000 people call Longyearbyen their home. It is located in the Arctic. The majority of its food is imported, and waste is exported, to feed the seasonal temporary employees as well as the long-term residents. Arctic farming is highly challenging, much alone sustainably because of the region's intense cold and powerful winds. But it's undoubtedly conceivable. Benjamin Vidmar, a co-founder of Polar Permacultures, grows his own microgreens and other veggies in his Longyearbyen greenhouse dome, so we headed to the Arctic to visit him.
