It's hard to be more miserable backpacking than being awake all night because you are cold...  A good sleeping pad will go a long way in this regard.  By keeping you insulated, you won't be robbed of your heat by the earth.  The Therm-A-Rest Z-Lite (and Sol) are awesome sleeping pads.  They are made of closed cell foam which means you will never wake to them deflated in the middle of the night.  Incredibly durable and plenty light.  Great for the backcountry or as a impromptu shooting mat.
