1100km journey across 3 countries with no flights
In my videos, I don't normally tell you how I get between the cities and countries I'm visiting, but I thought you might be interested in some of the more challenging journeys like this one. There are no flights between Ukraine and Romania at the minute, so we had to get creative.
In the video, we get on a train in Bucharest for 6 hours, stopping for 30 minutes in a town called Medgidia, then carried on in our first class carriage until we reached Tulcea. Upon walking out of the train station in Tulcea, we spotted some minibuses and asked the driver of a minibus that had Isaccea written on the front if it goes near the port. The guy didn't even open his mouth, he just stared at us. So we said "Isaccea" about 3 times and he just pointed at his watch, no intention of trying to communicate with potential customers. A passenger got off the bus to help us, so we bought a ticket to Isaccea, then sat in a restaurant to have a tea as we had some time. We then walked to Isaccea port to cross into Ukraine on a ferry.
We had no idea how we were going to get from Orlivka ferry port to Izmail. It turns out that there are absolutely no forms of public transport at Orlivka port, which is just ridiculous. Tanya spoke to a couple of people and a guy working in the insurance cabin called his cousin who offered to take us to Izmail for around 20 euros. We were grateful for this as we had a BlaBlaCar booked later that day to take us to Odessa.
We had some lunch then were collected by Alexei, the BlaBlaCar driver. This trip was pleasant. He decided to take a detour through Moldova which I found hilarious.
We stayed the night in Odessa, then waited around for the Flixbus journey to Kyiv the next day, which was awful. I've never witnessed such incompetence from a bus driver - it was embarrassing. Flixbus should be disgusted.
A simple 5 hour journey with a toilet and wifi turned into an 8 hour journey, with no wifi or toilet, instead we had to urinate next to the motorway in a concrete cubicle onto human faeces. We were also far too late to get onto the metro so we had to take an uber, adding to our costs that day.
Would never, ever recommend using Flixbus again after this shambles.
Moral of the story, take the train.
Location: Bucharest, Romania, to Kyiv, Ukraine via Moldova.
