In the 1930s, Campbell returned to the United States and began teaching at Sarah Lawrence College, where he would remain for the rest of his career. He quickly established himself as an expert in the field of comparative mythology and began writing and lecturing widely on the subject. He wrote several books, but his most famous one is "The Hero with a Thousand Faces," which was published in 1949. In this book, Campbell argues that all myths and stories, regardless of their cultural origin, share a common structure that he calls the "hero's journey." He argues that this structure is a reflection of the human experience and that it can be found in stories and myths from all cultures and all time periods.
