On January 20, 2023, at 10:15 pm, I was notified of a vehicle pursuit on US Highway 79 heading toward Fordyce. Calhoun County Sheriff's Office was in pursuit of a black Ford Expedition being driven by Gustavo Morales. Deputies advised they had contacted Mr. Morales on Calhoun County Road 1 about a possible burglary in progress. Mr. Morales then fled, striking a deputy's vehicle.
I made my way to US Highway 79 near the weight station. Officers with the Fordyce Police Department were in place and had spike strips set up to deploy. As the pursuit entered the area, Fordyce PD was able to successfully spike the vehicle, causing all four tires to begin deflating. I pulled out behind the vehicle and took over the pursuit. Approximately 1/2 a mile later, the right front tire of the suspect's vehicle exploded, sending debris across the roadway. The vehicle continued north on US Highway 79 toward Fordyce. As I moved into position to perform a Precision Intervention Technique (P. I. T.), the suspect vehicle intentionally entered the median and crossed into the southbound traffic lane to avoid me. I sped up and entered a cross-over to cut the vehicle off. As the vehicle continued northbound in the southbound lanes of travel, it exited the left side of the roadway, striking a highway sign before coming to a stop in the west ditch.
The driver (Gustavo Morales) exited the vehicle but would not comply to commands to get on the ground. Mr. Morales was taken to the ground by members of the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office. Once on the ground, Mr. Morales refused to cooperate and continued to physically resist by keeping his hands underneath his body. Calhoun County Deputy Adam McGilton deployed his TASER to gain Mr. Morales' compliance. He was taken into custody and transported to the Dallas County Detention Center. While speaking with Mr. Morales, it was clear he was under the influence of alcohol and methamphetamine. He was extremely confused and had no sense of his current reality.
A vehicle inventory was completed. Inside of the vehicle, I located numerous suspected methamphetamine pipes in multiple locations of the vehicle. In total, eight different pipes were seized as evidence. In the center console, I located a white plastic container. Inside of that container were numerous plastic baggies containing a crystal-like substance consistent with methamphetamine. The approximate weight of the baggies was 3 grams. All items were seized as evidence.
Mr. Morales was charged with felony fleeing, possession of a controlled substance, and eight (8) counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held pending a first appearance. Mr. Morales was issued citations for speeding, reckless driving, no seat belt, criminal mischief, driving left of center, driving the wrong way on a one way, failure to register a vehicle, resisting arrest, and DWI Drugs 1st. He was given a court date of March 9th, 2023, at 9 am.
The following items were seized as evidence and placed into storage at Troop F Headquarters in Warren.
Eight (8) pipes with crystal-like residue, one white plastic container with plastic baggies, three (3) plastic baggies with white crystal-like substance consistent with methamphetamine
The estimated weight of the suspected methamphetamine was three (3) grams with an estimated value of $150.00.
