Writer of the Clone Wars, Mr Gilroy, has revealed that Grievous was actually supposed to be Maul in disguise (somewhat) in Revenge of the Sith.
Imagine Obi-Wan goes to Utapau to fight Grievous and Maul takes his helmet off to reveal himself...at last...to the Jedi.
