A Name to a Face | The Somerton Man (UPDATE 2022)

On the 30th of November 1948, Somerton Park beach in Adelaide, South Australia, would be the birthplace to one of Australia’s most mysterious unsolved mysteries.

Two couples would separately see a smartly dressed man laying on the sand, with his head propped against a sea wall. The first couple, John Bain Lyons and his wife saw him at around 7pm. They claimed to have seen the man raise his arm, before dropping it down again limply. The second couple, who would come across him between 7.30 and 8pm.

Assuming the man to just be drunk and sleeping it off, he was left alone. But when John Lyons returned to the beach the following morning, he spotted the same man laying in the same spot as he had witnessed before.

This time however, people on horseback had gathered around him. To the shock of those observing what they saw before them, the man was in fact dead.

What was initially believed to be another routine investigation for police, would eventually turn into an unsolved case spanning almost 74 years, with the identity of the man only coming to light in July 2022.
