A Baseball Record That Will Not Be Broken: 27 Strikeouts in 1 Game

On this episode of SwingBadder Story Time, we'll talk about one of the most remarkable individual performances in baseball history.

On May 13, 1952, minor league pitcher Ron Necciai struck out 27 batters in a single game, a record that still stands to this day.

Necciai was a right-handed pitcher from Gallitzin, Pennsylvania who was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1951. At the time of his record-breaking performance, he was playing for the Bristol Twins in the Class D Appalachian League.

On May 13, 1952, the Bristol Twins played against the Welch Miners. Necciai took the mound. He struck out the side in the first, second, fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, and ninth innings, and recorded two strikeouts in the third and seventh innings. In total, he struck out 27 batters in a nine-inning game, a record that still stands today.

Necciai's 27 strikeouts in one game is still a professional baseball record, and it's unlikely that it will ever be broken. It's a testament to his skill as a pitcher, and it's a memorable moment in baseball history. His performance that day was so impressive that it earned him a promotion to the Pirates’ Class A team, and he eventually made it to the major leagues in 1955
