Gone surfing: possible death sentence for this 19-year-old

A 19-year-old woman from Brazil was arrested on the first day of 2023 when she arrived at the resort island of Bali for surfing lessons. She was apprehended with 3.9 kilograms of cocaine in her luggage, as local police has just recently made public.

While the full name of the young woman are public record by now – Indonesian as well as Brazilian news outlets published it for example, I’m not going to name her as she has not been convicted and it’s very possible that she’s coerced into bringing the illegal drugs to the island.

Indonesia has one of the most strict anti-drug laws on this planet, so don’t even think of bringing anything into the country for personal use, let alone with the intend to distribute – something that the judge decides for you based on the amount of drugs you have with you. The woman is currently in jail awaiting trial, where she can receive the death sentence. Indonesia occasionally hands these out.

The most recent execution of a foreigner was in 2016.
