America’s Decision-Making Moment is Now (feat. William J. Federer)

In the same way Joshua said, “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord” (Jos 24:15), so too must each American citizen decide to stand up against evil and defend the good. Best-selling historian William J. Federer traces America’s political tradition back to Ancient Israel (Pre-Saul) in which each member of the community had a say in their meeting house (synagogue in Hebrew).

Despite the fact that the most common form of government in history is kingship (with Europe’s political order emphasizing the kingship of Saul onwards) Federer highlights how America’s founders flipped the script and made the people — the citizenry — king. Active engagement of everyday Americans (citizen in Greek means co-king) to resist unjust government mandates is integral to our American heritage. In colonial times, when local meeting houses were shuttered by royal decree and a representative form of government was threatened, Americans rose up to defend their rights.

Federer sees our own time of moral and political crisis as one in which young leaders on fire with defending the truth are being raised up in the same way Gideon, David, Moses, and Washington rose up when the situation was bleak.
