How to Make a Dibble (Mittleider Gardening) Dibble Dibber Dibbler

When I first saw the word Dibble written in the Mittleider Gardening Course book. I thought "What on earth is that?" As I continued to read I found that I had been using rudimentary "Dibbles" for years. A Dibble is a long pointy object used to gently remove young seedlings for transplanting. In the past, I had used pencils or old knitting needles for this. But now with the course book's directions, I had the exact directions of how to make an official Dibble of my own.

DIBBLE SUPPLIES:
1/2 inch dowel
Measuring Tape
Miter Saw
Belt sander or 1/2-inch carpenter pencil sharpener
Pencil
Wood Burner (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Begin making the dibble by marking and cutting the dowel at the 6-inch mark.

I decided to add depth markers to mine so I marked also marked the 1, 2, and 3-inch depths.

I then used a belt sander to create a pointed end. You could use a carpenter's pencil sharpener for this. (I was going to but found that mine was just a little too small for my dowel.)

Then I used a wood burner (actually I used my husband's soldering iron) to burn over the depth marks I made, making them more permanent.

This is a super easy project to do. I can't wait to see if it works better than my knitting needles.
