About 30 modern species belong to the genus Sepia, living mainly in warm seas, near the coast. Several fossil species are known from the Jurassic and Tertiary deposits. Cuttlefish can swim, but usually stay at the bottom, watching for their prey, consisting of fish and crustaceans.
