A full penalty, also known as a "penalty kick" or simply a "penalty," is a type of direct free-kick awarded to a team when a foul is committed by an opposing player inside their own penalty area in soccer (football).

The penalty is taken from a spot on the ground 12 yards (11 meters) away from the center of the goal and is an opportunity for the attacking team to score a goal without any other players, except for the goalkeeper, being involved. The goalkeeper must remain on their goal-line until the penalty kick is taken, and they are allowed to move freely within the penalty area to try and stop the shot.

The penalty is considered a high-pressure situation and is often a critical moment in a soccer match, as scoring from a penalty can swing the momentum of the game in favor of the team that is awarded the penalty.
