Getting started with Tableau Calculations | Understand the basics

Hello and welcome to this module on Tableau calculations. We are going to be
doing a brief introduction to the various types of calcultions. We will be discussing
the key types in Tableau.

First are the Row Level Calculations. These calculations calculate all of the values
at a row level. To give an example, let’s say you have an orders table. All the
orders are unique and the row that has been assigned to each of these orders –
the calculation takes place at that level.

The second type is the Aggregated Calculation. These calculations help you to sum up or make any kind of aggregations to a particular column and then store that
value as an aggregated measure.

Third, and we are going to be dedicating an entire module to this type, is the Level
of Detail (LOD) Calculation. These are basically nested SQL statements which are
very useful for cohort analysis. We are going to be taking a deep dive into these
types of calculations that relate to the level of detail.

Finally, we come to the Table Calculations. Tableau gives an inherent and
automatic way to do table calculations but it is not restricted to that. Many of us
don’t that Tableau calculations, which are also table calculations, can also be
done with the help of a calculated field.
We will take a deep dive into what these are and we will take a few examples as
to what these four types of calculations mean and how they will be helpful in
order for you to conduct your day-to-day analysis and generate great reports of
having great KPIs. So let’s take a look into the practical of this particular concept.
