Indonesian Mimic Octopus

The mimic octopus was discovered in 1998 off the coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia. They get their name for their ability to change their skin colors, texture and shape in order to 'mimic' being other sea life animals.

SCUBA divers have reported Mimic Octopuses resembling: Sole Fish (flounder), Lionfish, Sea snakes, Anemones, Stingrays, Mantis shrimp, Jellyfish, Crocodile snake, eels, Seahorses, Feather stars, Nudibranchs, Brittle stars, Sponges, Tube worms and Colonial tunicates.
