Harvested Chickens Today But Not On Video

We processed six of our meat chickens. We did not record the process though but we showed them before and after the process.

Our six oldest birds were ready for the table. They are the first meat birds I ever had so it was an experiment for us both.

They grow very fast and are usually ready for the table in about 8 to 12 weeks. We had ours semi free ranging and cage free all day so they got a lot of exercise. It took them longer to fill out for us.

We did it carefully so that none of the birds saw what was going on and had no fear. For them it was just another day.

In the kitchen Melanie processed the meat for the freezer while I cleaned up outside.

We have a freezer full of meat now.

Our next batch of chickens will be ready in about a month or so. They are halfway there.

The bigger birds were using up three gallons of water a day and six quarts of food each day. It was just way too much for us to keep up with.

I also worked in the chicken coop quite a bit. I split up the two sets of chicks by groups. We have the buff orpingtons and the meat bird chicks.

Now there are in separate brooders so that I can care for them better according to their needs.

The meat birds use more water and food than the little orpingtons. The meat birds now have a 3 quart water container and will have two quarts of food.

The orpingtons will have 1.5 quarts of food and two quarts of water.

The larger birds have a 3 gallon food container and a 3 gallon water container.

Now I dont have to work as hard each day on the birds.
