Awesome Off Grid Solar & Busy Day At The Homestead

It was a very busy day again at the off grid homestead. All three of us worked hard getting the homestead cleaned up and presentable.

In the morning hours Melanie and I were both busy in the tiny house kitchen. I was working on goat cheddar cheese while Melanie was baking a cake. I had to dip the curing cheese in wax to protect it during its aging process. Melanie makes her own cake from scratch using all natural ingredients.

Melanie and I cleaned the solar and water battery shed. It ended up being a catch all from everyone during the busy summer hours. But right now we have to empty it and prepare for winter. I am going to finish insulating the shed for winter to keep the rain water tanks from freezing. And I will put an insulated sliding door on the front.

I am also planning a solar battery charging station for odd batteries that we have around the homestead.

We are down to the last 50 gallons of water again on the homestead. It has not rained much at all this year. Normally I am swamped with water each year but this year we are in a drought situation. Even the pond and the creek are very low this year.

Chris and I loaded a water tank onto the bed of the truck and tossed in his little HF generator, the water pump and a bit of hose. We went over to the creek for some water. The creek is very low but I found a place to put the submersible water pump I recently bought second hand. We used the generator to power the water pump and got a half tank in the 275 gallon IBC tote. I did not want to put much more than that on the truck. Full the tank weighs about 2,000 pounds.

Many people tell me to put a ram pump in the creek to provide water for the off grid tiny home. But there are a few problems with this idea. The creek is about a quarter mile from the house and not on our property.

We have very cold winters here and a quarter mile of slow moving intermediate flowing water would freeze up unless it was buried about five feet deep. Then we have the problem that its not my land and digging out here would be very expensive due to the rocks and boulders.

The solar power situation at the off grid tiny house is looking better. With some of the trees down we have even more sunlight hours on the solar panels. When we get the rest of the trees down we will have a very good situation here with the solar power.

Our batteries are in absorption mode by 1 pm and in float mode by late afternoon now though. But we only use laptops and small electronic devices most of the time until we improve our sunlight hours on the solar panels.

We cleaned up by the side of the tiny house on wheels and around the storage tent. The old Craftsman riding lawn mower was moved over by the rest of the power equipment. Now all of our equipment is parallel parked neatly in one place. The homestead is really looking good these days.

While Chris and I worked on moving stuff Melanie continued to rake up the entire property making it look very nice.

In the evening hours I got out the chain saw and cut some more of the trees we have dropped. I cut them into logs and then fired up the log splitter to split them into fire wood. This wood will be ready for use next year.
