Back To Normal At The Off Grid Homestead

We had a friend over for the week and then more joined us for the weekend. They actually helped us on the homestead over the weekend.

It was not all work though. We had to cover the tomato plants to prevent them from freezing on the second night. I had no idea about the first freeze but was determined to prevent the second freeze.

We also went out into the woods and cut about a half cord of fire wood. We split and stacked the wood out in front of the fire pit. This will allow the wood to get maximum sunlight and air flow to fully dry out. This was all dead standing timber so it is cured but wet.

I plan to cut more wood each week until winter sets in. We plan to heat our home with fire wood for the most part this winter.

Melanie was not alone or in danger when Sam and I went out to a cabin in the woods for an adventure. We did a lot of videos during this time to please check out TR Tech Tactical and Survival on YouTube to see.

We cut away the dead tomato foliage to save what was left of the good growth. We still hope to have some tomatoes from our garden this year.

The chili plants look like a total loss though. And we lost most of our pumpkins, squash and cukes to the freeze.

Two of the guys helped Melanie move around some furniture to get ready for the arrival of our new baby.

Some people are doubting me when I talk about the weather because just 5 miles away in town they have milder weather with less temperature swings. But this is because in town they have a large lake which affects the weather a lot. And the weather station for us is in town. We have different weather due to the sandy soil which does not retain the heat of the day. So like in the desert we get hotter days and colder nights.

We are going to need a greenhouse for next year for sure.
