Harvesting Chickens ~ Digging Greenhouse ~ Mega Rainstorm

We harvested our larger group of meat birds today. I spent most of the other half of the day digging the greenhouse until a bad thunderstorm hit, ending my work day outside.

Melanie harvested the fallen green tomatoes. We had a killer frost recently which wiped out a lot of our garden just before the harvest season. Many green tomatoes fell off the vine.

I found an easy and fast way to move the meat bird chicken tractor around each time. I move the birds every two days. This gives them fresh grass and bugs and keeps them cleaner. They live in the chicken tractor now full time.

Later we harvested the larger meat chickens. This took us quite some time. We are not experts so we are not very fast at the job.

After that I worked in the greenhouse. I am digging a large hole in the ground where we will grow vegetables all year round. At about 6 feet deep the ground is always 50 degrees F. By putting the greenhouse in the ground we can take advantage of that warmer temperature. The sun can then further heat the earth down there to extend our growing season.

I got all the topsoil and grass off the surface of the work area before a very powerful storm hit. The rain was very intense, flooding the land immediately. There was also thunder and lightning so I could not safely work anymore outside.

Later the rain let up a lot so I dug more but the earth was wet and heavy. After three wheel barrow loads I had to call it a night. Plus the mosquitoes were out in force now.

A package arrived containing a bunch of Mother Earth News magazines and some screws. Melanie and I both browsed the magazines during the heavy rain. There are many good articles for homesteading in them. Thank you.
