Early Maple Tree Tapping & Off Grid Homesteading

We have had a longer period of warmer weather the past ten days so I decided to try tapping the maple trees and see if I get some sap. I was surprised to find a heavy flow on this late January day.

I ran around and put in all the taps that I had set up from last year. I ran out of tubing and could not find my other box of tubing or I would have continued tapping all the trees that we found on the property this year.

I have found about 60 or so maple trees and marked them this fall. We are going to have a real maple syrup production this year.

Chris will run the boiler and feed the wood stove while I run the raw sap collection. Melanie will be processing the finished product and canning the syrup.

I have to find that new box of tubing. I had ordered a 500 foot roll last spring for the maple syrup season but it never arrived until after the season. I never opened it. Now I need it urgently.

I hope to really amp up maple syrup production this year at the off grid homestead.
