Hauling Compost & Mulch For Our Homestead Garden
I started out the day hauling compost and mulch for our homestead garden. The compost amends the soil and adds nutrients while the mulch covers the walkways and prevents weeds from growing there.
We are beginning a no till garden this year. We had to till at first in order to have a garden at all. But once the garden is established we will no longer have to till.
We are using a combined square foot garden and back to eden garden method.
I use a modified square foot garden. The idea is that you can reach into the center from all sides of a 4 foot square garden. With the square foot garden you have more space for planting and less loss to pathways in between.
I have modified the idea and use 4 foot wide rows with 2 foot wide walkways in between. There are no paths through the rows. This reduces garden space loss even more. And we can still reach into the middle from either side.
I am also hoping to use the back to eden method which is a no till garden. With this method you build up compost and mulch through the years and never till the soil again.
Each year you just add more compost and and mulch on top of the grow beds. This builds up nutrients and retains moisture. The garden produces better than with a standard tilled or plowed garden.
These methods also provide you with a fertile organic garden. If you are only adding natural compost and mulch then you are basically following nature's way and building up an organic garden.
This method also costs nothing if you can source the mulch and compost or produce it yourself.
A couple packages arrived in the mail today. My meters for the Bedini motor showed up early. I am still waiting for the wire to arrive and then I can show you how to build one yourself.
Also a surprise package came containing a Hero 4 GoPro camera. This was fully unexpected and a very nice surprise. I think that if this camera works well for me I will use this as my daily camera and give Melanie my old one. The wind blowing on my other camera is horrible and many people complain about it.
The GoPro claims to have overcome the wind problem. I will try it out and see how it works.
Thank you very much for sending this to me.
