Yard & Garden Day At The Homestead
It was raining on and off all day but I still worked in the yard in between rain storms. I had to mow the entire yard with a push mower but actually got it done on one tank of gas.
I wanted to get the garden planted today but due to the constant rain storms I never got to it.
In between storms I fired up the old Toro self propelled lawn mower that I repaired a year ago and mowed the entire lawn on a single tank of gas.
Watch the video where I restored this machine. It was seized up and not running when I got it. Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLsQaIcdJsE&index=6&list=PLlUzPxYD3NgpkMrplJL5DUReM1A1ycwgs
I cannot believe how long this machine runs on a tank of gas. I did not think I could get the entire lawn done before it ran out of gas. But I actually had enough to do some trim on the edges of the lawn where nature is encroaching on our yard.
The snapper garden tractor needs some repair work but I only paid $20 for it about a year ago. I cleaned the carburetor and got the machine running but the drive wheel is worn out and needs to be replaced. This is cheap though at only $15 online so I will buy a new one.
I also have to figure out how to repair the brakes because the brake mechanism is jammed up inside the drive wheel and not connected to anything.
Also the carb leaks out its fuel overnight so the needle must be worn out.
A cool thing about the old Snapper lawn mower is that you can stand it up on its back for service. It is actually designed to be stored like this. You can reach everything underneath the machine with ease. I love this.
I will repair this old mower and get it back into service for use on our huge yard.
Inside Melanie was baking bread and tortillas. She bakes ahead of time and then freezes the food for later use. She is really talented in the kitchen.
Later on it was still raining so I worked in the wood shop for a while. I am trying out a new rotary tool for review and wanted to work a bit with some scrap wood.
I cut off a piece of pallet wood and used the rotary tool with a router bit to form the edges. Then I burnt them with a lighter. I used my belt sander for rough sanding and then the hand sander for fine sanding.
Then I used the rotary tool to carve out a flower and Melanie's name in the wood. Next I used the wood burner to burn the deep cuts to bring them out in view.
All of this was done fully off the grid using solar power from my battery bank in the shed next to my wood shop.
I hope to start building things for sale in the off grid wood shop and increase our income some.
