Winter Greenhouse Update After Intense Cold

After some very cold nights at the off grid greenhouse I took the camera in for an update on the plants and status of things out there.

We had temperatures down to 3 degrees F during the night and I was worried that I would lose the entire greenhouse. I used a small Mr Heater Buddy to help keep the greenhouse from freezing during the night.

During cloudy days I use the antique wood stove and water boiling system to keep the greenhouse warm.

On sunny winter days I do not need any sort of heat in the off grid greenhouse. The sun heats the place up very nicely even on a very cold and sunny day.

I sometimes see temperatures in the high 50s in the greenhouse with no other heat besides the warmth of the suns rays.

I am learning what type of plants I will be able to keep alive in the off grid greenhouse in winter. Tomatoes are very sensitive and died off right away. Chili plants made it through up to the coldest nights and then died.

Lettuce, Kale and the cabbage family grow just fine in colder weather. Peas and beans will do very well.

I have not had time to try any root vegetables yet but I plan to get some into the ground as soon as I have time.

I am using the greenhouse as a place to varnish my recycled pallet wood products because it is warm in there during the day. And this is the best place because it is not as dusty as my wood shop or the off grid tiny house on wheels.
