Melanie Using The Log Splitter & Canning Garden Harvest

I got the log splitter going again and Melanie actually took over splitting fire wood for a while. She really enjoyed it. We are eating mostly all organic foods now from our own garden.

It had been raining all day on and off but mostly on. So I did not go outside much for the first part. Melanie and I worked on some paperwork that had to be done anyway.

We are eating almost fully from our own organic garden now. Our harvest this year is providing us with just about everything we need. Fish from the lake helps supplement our food with some meat now and then. Melanie uses some canned foods that I already had on hand to add to our vegetables.

But our grocery budget dropped dramatically the last two months. Both Melanie and I feel very good about eating from our own organic garden. It is clean healthy food.

I got the log splitter running in the afternoon when the rain stopped. I did not want to swap out the engine because it was still threatening to rain the entire time.

I have a larger engine for the log splitter but it will take some work to do the job. I am also looking for a belt tensioner to keep pressure on the belt and prevent it from slipping.

I am currently using a 79cc engine from Harbor Freight that I got very cheap a year or two ago. It was an open box and I got it for $48 on clearance. It is very weak for this machine but it splits most logs ok.

I was running the log splitter when Melanie came out to milk the goats. She wanted to try it so I let her split some fire wood. She was smiling the whole time. She really loves it. This is a very old machine but is very easy to operate. Just a slight pressure with a finger causes the piston to move either forward or backward.

Later I continued on splitting fire wood. I plan to run this engine out of gas. It is sputtering a bit from bad gas and I want to burn it out and then replace it with clean, good gas with no ethanol.

I split quite a bit of fire wood before the belt eventually spun off but the engine was still running. I wanted to let it burn through the tank of gas so I left it. I figured it was almost empty anyway but the thing ran and ran. Sometime after dark it finally ran out. This sure is an efficient engine.

I plan to swap out this engine with an 8 hp engine that I have. Then this engine will replace the one on the DC generator. The generator will be inside the battery shed by the off grid tiny house on wheels. I will continue to use that for charging our solar batteries during low light days.

Melanie has been really baking and cooking a lot recently. She was making us some all natural pizza from scratch. She makes literally everything herself here on the homestead.

Melanie canned some dilled green beans as well today. These are from our own garden. We are hoping to put away a lot of food for the winter months.
