Saturday A Friend Helped On The Homestead
Saturday a friend came over to help out on the off grid homestead. Melanie baked some fine muffins and a cake - all from scratch. We cleaned out the wood shop tent. And we cleaned up the work area in the forest where the new chicken run will be.
This video is from Saturday. The previous video was actually out of order because I misplaced this video on my laptop. Sorry about that and for any confusion this may create.
Melanie baked some muffins and a cake. She made a carrot cake from all natural ingredients. She does literally everything herself including grating the carrots. Our baked goods are organic, natural and quite healthy. They are also lower in sugar than those from the store.
Melanie even makes her own frosting and finishes literally everything on her own using all natural ingredients.
Outside our friend helped us clear out the brush and haul logs while Chris and I cut fire wood from the trees which we had dropped on the previous day.
We managed to clear out all of the brush and most of the logs that were in the work area including the stuff that I cut on this day.
We are not going to have any worries about fire wood for the off grid tiny house for the next couple years.
We are clearing out trees on the side of the meadow on our 56 acres of land for multiple reasons.
The most important reason is to get more sunlight on our solar panels during the day. In peak summer hours with the sun right above us we only get about 2 hours of direct sunlight on the solar panels. With the sun lower in the sky we actually get more direct sunlight but then it is weaker.
The trees are blocking most of our sunlight hours from the off grid tiny house solar panels.
We also need to get sunlight on the animals for their health. When it rains there is no sun to dry the ground out there and it remains wet. We cannot have this or the animals could get sick. Plus sun is also good for the animals. They have their shed for shelter and shade.
And we are expanding the chicken run to go all the way around the perimeter of the meadow. This will allow the birds to have free run around the place and eat ticks and other bugs. This will keep the meadow safe for us to work in.
Melanie helped me bring in all the thin paneling that we are going to use upstairs in the tiny house loft. We are going to sand this paneling down and then put it up with some trim for a board and batten look. For now we put it inside the wood shop tent to protect it from the elements and to clean up the area by the goat pen.
