Building Large Chicken Run At The Homestead

Using materials we have on hand, scraps and left overs we are building a large chicken range which will allow the birds to somewhat free range but keep them safe from predators.

I have a roll of chicken wire left over from last year. We have a mess of T posts and metal stakes. Plus some other odds and ends that we are using to build this chicken range. I did buy 5 new T posts though that we needed for strength.

We are also using the natural trees when possible to hold up the chicken fence.

Most of you will remember that for the past few weeks we have been cutting down trees and cutting them up into logs. Then we stacked them up along the goat pen to get them out of the way until we get the log splitter going. We had to clear out an area for the chickens. They need sunlight and a dry area to live or they will get sick and die. Plus these trees have to go anyway in order to allow the sunlight to reach the solar panels all day.

We nailed the end of the roll of chicken wire onto a tree using thick metal staples and a hammer.

Melanie rolled out the chicken wire while I held it in place and then Chris came along behind and tied the chicken wire to the posts using scrap electric fence wire bits and pieces. This makes good baling wire.

Working as a team we got the chicken range done in a short time. It sure beats doing this alone as I have been all these years.
