Preparing To Build Chicken Range & Other Homestead Activities

Lots going on at the off grid homestead today. Before starting the chicken run we dropped yet another tree. Melanie is making sweet potato chips from scratch. And much more.

I love our turkeys. In the morning they follow me around exitedly chirping as I go to get them their breakfast. They sound so cute.

Melanie milks the goats in the morning while I work on the video for the day, giving you something to watch with your coffee. The goats are well trained and we simply open and gate, let one goat out and it runs into the milking station.

We are hoping to get the log splitter moved soon and get the belt tensioner on it. The belt is loose and needs a tensioner arm. The tires were blown out when I got the log splitter for free two years ago so it was always nearly impossible to move. I got two free tires from a friend but the rims dont fit. So we need to take them in to be swapped out.

We were going to start the chicken range today but I decided to drop one more tree just in case it may fall to the side and destroy our work. It is better to drop the trees first and then build new things later. I cut it all up into logs on the spot.

It sure opens up the view here. Things are really looking good out here now.

In order to cut the tree when it is laying on the ground I use a pry bar and a log to lever the tree up off the ground while Chris puts a log under the tree. This holds the tree up off the ground so I can cut it with the chain saw with no danger of hitting the dirt and dulling the chain.

We have some sweet potatoes that we got on sale so Melanie was trying her hand at making sweet potato fries and chips. They sure looked good as she was frying them up. She cut them all up by hand. Melanie does just about everything here by hand and uses all natural, healthy ingredients.

When we are not working on a project together Chris is always cutting the branches from the trees that we dropped and stacking them into the fire wood shed. We are going to have a whole lot of fire wood this year and for the years to come.
