Dr Don Layman: We don't really have a
protein requirement!
-we have an amino acids requirement
-think of amino acids as nutrients
-we actually require 9 essential
amino acids and organic nitrogen
-especially in plant-based diets
"Checking cereal nutrition labels;
they add wheat & milk protein together,
but, there is NO WAY
THEY ARE THE SAME"
-wheat protein: if says 4g,
it has LESS THAN 2g
due to bioavailability or
LACK OF AMINO ACIDS
"If we eat 120g protein a day, no problem,
but, plant based will be in trouble due to
low quality and low quantity"
Branch chain amino acid: leucine...
-must get adequate amounts
AT EACH MEAL or muscle will suffer
-mass & strength will decrease
-aging adults BEWARE
-over 40? need 3g leucine per meal
to maintain MUSCLE HEALTH
[muscle health = the organ of LONGEVITY]
People think plant-based means...
-lentils, nuts, soy
REALITY: 80% plant protein from wheat

in terms of amino acids"
-lysine, methionine, leucine
ALL VERY LOW IN WHEAT PROTEIN
Question: How to get 3g leucine each meal?
-most studied: Whey protein [12% leucine]
[wheat: 6.8%]
-whey protein very available, water-soluble, tastes good
Meats & fish: 9% leucine
Eggs: 9.5% leucine
"All animal proteins are 9% and up;
plant proteins are 8% and down"
-milk protein 9.5%
[80% casein; 20% whey]
