The guitar is a special instrument because it's melodic and harmonic. It can play a supporting role in music or be featured as a lead.

Nearly half of our job as students of the guitar is to be studying harmony and chords. That's why I'm launching a multi-video series on how to learn guitar chords from the ground up. 

This lesson series will cover everything from basic guitar chords for beginners to complex seventh chords, chord extensions, inversions, rootless chords, and much more. 

Most importantly I'm going to be talking about how to think about chords, how to see them on the fretboard, how to analyze them, and how to create them from scratch using music theory. 

Instead of being locked in to certain shapes learned from chord diagrams, I want you to have options and creative control.

From basic guitar chords for beginners all the way to advanced concepts like inversions and extensions, I want you to understand chords on the guitar. I want you to know where they come from, how to label them, how to talk about them, and how to manipulate them, so you can have creative control - and not just find yourself playing physical chord shapes without knowing why. Basic guitar chords are definitely an important first step, but learning how to label them unlocks a ton of possibilities, which is what we'll work towards understanding in the next few lessons.
