Misery, diseases and the such each function their own way. They are a result of natural flow disruptions. Similarly, a disrupted economy will show signs of "disease". Similarly, misery is a disruption in an individual's correct functioning, which is getting worse and worse in time. Individual influences on society reflect back on everyone else as well. One's ignorance leads to others' ignorance and then it comes back reinforcing it. Exactly how a pandemic would exist. Ignorance needs hosts, just like pathogens do.
