Building A Pallet Wood Sugar Shack

As I have planned, I am building a sugar shack out of pallet wood. I have a mess of odd sized and type pallets off to the side for this project.

Last year my attempts of boiling down maple sap into maple syrup were not very successful due to a very rainy season. You cannot boil down sap when the rain is replacing the water as fast as it can boil off. And it was hard to maintain a fire as well.

So this year I have been planning to build a sugar shack and smokehouse. In the spring this will serve as a sugar shack for processing maple sap into maple syrup.

In the fall this will serve as a smoke house for processing meat into jerky for long term storage.

I can keep my smoker and maple boiler in the sugar shack all year round and protect them from the elements.

I managed so far to get the walls up. This was no easy task alone. Trying to hold and balance a pallet in the air while trying to screw it together is not so easy alone. But I managed in the end.

Also time consuming was sorting through pallets to find the best fit for each piece in the wall. And then strengthening the walls using scrap pallet pieces.

After I got the walls up I then carted over a long piece of barn wood. This is a 2x10 plank which will serve as a sort of load bearing beam over the door posts. Another piece will go on top of this one and then the roof will go on the whole assembly. This will give the roof a bit of a slant to allow rain and snow to run off.
