Back To Eden Style No Till Gardening This Year
In a single day I prepared the Back to Eden style garden and managed to get 174 plants in. It was a long, hard day but I managed to get all the plants in and mulched around them.
I had cardboard in one row of my garden for a couple weeks now to kill off the weeds. I had then put piles of leaves on top of the cardboard. This held down the cardboard and kept the weeds from pushing through. It also caused some of the cardboard to break down into the soil.
After mowing down the grass the other day, I decided to just plant right into the rows and then heavily mulch around the plants to keep the weeds from growing back.
I planted about 36 tomato plants in one row. Then I pulled the leaves off the cardboard and put them around the tomato plants about 4 inches deep. This will break down, fertilizing the soil and also provide a nice weed cover.
When the tomatoes grow a bit higher I will add tree mulch on top of the soil to better hold the weeds down.
Next I planted a row of peppers, tomatoes and other vegetables and then mulched around them with the tree leaves. I used some of the cardboard from the middle row to cover the ground around the plants.
Then I removed the cardboard from the sides of the middle row to expose the earth. I planted an entire row of zucchini and squash here and then covered the exposed areas with the left over cardboard and leaves.
There was some cardboard left over so I used that to cover some of the exposed grass and weeds along the edges of the garden.
I also managed to get a mess of vine plants in around the large rock herb garden. I planted them along the outside edge so they will provide a dense ground cover when they grow. I have pie pumpkins and large ones. Various acorn squash and watermelons around one rock.
Around the other rock garden I planted sweet melons.
I mulched around each plant to protect them from drying out and from weeds.
Around the main garden edge I planted cucumbers and some melons.
I still have a lot of work to do but the garden has been started and i will get a lot more vegetables in yet. I hope to plant peas, beans and root vegetables next.
