Preparing Cast Iron Pot For Soap Making & A New Creature At The Off Grid Homestead

After cleaning my rusty old cast iron pot in the fire the other night the next step was to clean off the iron oxide rust powder and season the pot for use.

I first use a wire wheel on a drill to brush off all the rust powder on the pot. This was a very rusty pot. All the rust had been turned to a powder that was coating the pot now though since I had burned it out in a fire.

The powder just had to be brushed off.

The next step was to wipe the pot down with a paper towel and olive oil. This cleaned off any residual rust powder and coated the pot with a protective oil coating.

After I had it all cleaned up I put another generous coating of olive oil on the cast iron pot inside and out. Then I put it on the wood stove to cure for a few hours.

I plan to use this old cast iron pot to make soap from now on.

I have a new addition to the off grid homestead. I have a rescue kitten. It is a six month old female kitten. It is very loving and purrs a lot. But it needed a home so I brought it to the tiny house on wheels. I am hoping Baby cat and this one will become good friends.
