DIY Cleaning Tiny House Chimney Pipe For The First Time

Suddenly, after all the snow we have been getting, smoke started to pour into my tiny house on wheels through the chimney pipe. It was actually going downwards through the seams. This told me that the pipe was plugged up somewhere.

I got a chimney pipe brush and a couple extensions so I could clean out the tiny house chimney pipe.

I use primarily wood to heat my off grid tiny house on wheels. Burning fire wood means you will have to clean your chimney pipe from time to time.

I had Chris come help in case I fell off the snow and ice covered roof. I did not want to take any chances with my safety.

When I got up on the roof I discovered that the problem was the spark arrestor. It was fully clogged up with creosote. I think what happened is that all this snow was hitting the smoke flowing through the spark arrestor and cooled the smoke on contact. That congealed on the chimney pipe cap, closing off the spark arrestor screen. Eventually it clogged up fully and no smoke was allowed out the stove pipe.

While I cleaned out the chimney pipe with a brush, Chris used pliers to push through each and every hole in the screen to free it from creosote.

When the chimney pipe cap was clean, Chris tossed it up to me and I put it back on and made my way carefully back to Earth.

Inside my tiny house I still had a job to do. Now all that filth that was in the chimney pipe was down inside the stove pipe, at the bottom.

I put a bucket under the stove pipe cleanout junction and carefully knocked off the cover with a rubber mallet. Immediately a whole bucket full of creosote fell into the bucket. What a mess.

I tapped on the stove pipe with the rubber mallet as well to make sure all the creosote fell out. When I was sure it was all cleaned out, I replaced the cap and fired up the wood stove.

I got a nice, hot fire going to burn off any residue in the pipes.

It sure feels good to have a nice fire going in the tiny home again.
