Sanding My Tiny House Floor Plus Some Nice Finds

Friday I sanded the plywood flooring of my tiny house on wheels to prepare it for shellac. This will be the floor of my home.

In the morning I took a ride with my neighbor around the neighborhood. He wanted to show me a couple things which will help me out with my off grid homestead.

First stop was a lumber yard where an older man has a saw mill and sells rough cut oak lumber. He is a bit more expensive than the bigger stores but has nice wood. There are a couple things there that interest me.

First is the free saw dust. I can get tons, literally, of free sawdust which will go on my garden to start my back to eden style gardening.

Second are the huge bundles of rough cut end pieces and off cuts that sell for only $20 a bundle. These are about 4 - 5 feet wide and about 12 - 15 feet long. Some of the pieces would make nice furniture or shelving. Others are good for burning this winter.

I started out with 120 grit sand paper and an electric finishing sander to sand off all the scuff marks and pencil marks on the plywood sub flooring. To save money and weight in my tiny house on wheels this will be my floor. I hand chose the best pieces of tongue and groove plywood sub flooring with the nicest patterns.

The guys at Lowes were kind enough to allow me to sort through a whole pallet and even helped out. Once you tell people what you are doing they become interested and are happy to help out.

The boards got quite dirty during transportation, storage and installation on my tiny house floor. But the sander did a very good job of cleaning it up. The job went relatively fast as well. Way faster than I had thought.

After finishing the rough sanding with 120 grit I went back over the whole floor again with 180 grit sand paper to smooth it out nicely.

All of the rough and peeling patches smoothed out as well.

I swept the whole floor to get the bulk of the dust off before covering it all up again for the night.
