Hello,
glad you are visiting my channel. In this video I restore a paper punch. I saw the old hole punch and was immediately fascinated by the extremely functional design. The entire mechanism is exposed and very demonstrative. Unfortunately, the beautifully exposed mechanism is heavily rusted and no longer fully functional.
The punch was manufactured by Henssson, an office supplies company that produced in Weimar, Germany around the 1910s.
The restoration of the antique office article I started as always with the complete disassembly. During the disassembly, I noticed that all the rusty mechanical parts were once nickel plated. This is clearly visible from the flaking coating that is eroded by the rust.
After disassembly, I once again had the parts sandblasted by mister patina. The sandblasting was very time consuming because the punch was not painted but had a japanning coating. This very complex technique was very often used at the beginning of the 20th century, such as for writing and sewing machines. The technique was intended to imitate the deep black coating of Japanese imports and has its origins in the 17th century.
For japanning, a mixture of tar, turpentine and linseed oil is mixed and, after a long curing period, applied by brush and then baked in the oven. The baking itself is carried out in several steps and is extremely time-consuming.
It was particularly important to me to preserve the antique charm of this object and therefore I decided to renew the japanning and not to paint the punch. I have also completely renewed and polished the nickel plating on the mechanical components.
The result is that the punch shines in a completely new brilliance. the techniques used make it possible to imagine that the punch is back as it was more than 100 years ago in an office shop window.
I hope you have fun with the video. Feel free to ask questions.
