What is A Faith Based Organization? What Is An Association? Time To Clarify.

In this video, I clarify some things in regard to Churches and Ministries, Faith Based Organizations and Faith Based Associations.

First, we review the IRS definition of "church."
Certain characteristics are generally attributed to churches. These attributes of a church have been developed by the IRS and by court decisions. They include:
• Distinct legal existence
• Recognized creed and form of worship
• Definite and distinct ecclesiastical government
• Formal code of doctrine and discipline
• Distinct religious history
• Membership not associated with any other church or denomination
• Organization of ordained ministers
• Ordained ministers selected after completing prescribed courses of study
• Literature of its own
• Established places of worship
• Regular congregations
• Regular religious services
• Sunday schools for the religious instruction of the young
• Schools for the preparation of its members

Next we cover the original term for "church."
The original term in the Bible was not “church.” It was “Eckklesia.”which is a Greek word. The word church was later introduced into the Bible as a replacement for the word Eckklesia. Earlier versions of the Bible used the word “gathering” or “assembly” in place of the word church. These words are a better description of what Eckklesia actually is, which is a group of people who are called to assemble for organizational and administrative purposes.

Next, we have the Black's Law definition -
• Definition & Citations:
• In Its most general sense, the religious society founded and established by Jesus Christ, to receive, preserve, and propagate his doctrines and ordinances. A body or community of Christians, united under one form of government by the profession of the same faith, and the observance of the same ritual and ceremonies. The term may denote either a society of persons who, professing Christianity, hold certain doctrines or observances which differentiate them from other like groups, and who use a common discipline, or the building in which such persons habitually assemble for public worship.
Funny, how this "legal" definition closely matches the Ekklesia definition and not so much the IRS definition.

Now, to clarify the perceptual difference between Faith-Based Organizations such as Church, Ministry, Temple, Synagogue, and Mosque (we pretty much know what is going on in these places when we see one or hear the word) and Association, Non-profit, Not-for-profit, for-profit and integrated auxiliaries. Even if the latter are denoted to be "Faith-Based," our perception may not lead us to know what is going on there.

So, we need to be prepared to be able to explain why we have a Faith Based Association if the need arises.
