Abraham had returned all the plundered stolen possessions of the people of Sodom. So there was certainly some recognition. This personal respect may have made his a self-proclaimed leader.
So, Lot knows this city and the evil in it. Lot also knows the nights are very dangerous. Nothing new there. But here in Sodom, things are very very dangerous and full of evil. It seems that only Lot is a righteous tsaw deek = just, lawful, righteous and his family.
EZE 16:48-51, As I live, says the LORD GOD, Sodom was full of pride, fullness of bread, and prosperous they were haughty, and committed abomination before ME: therefore, I took them away as I saw good.
