Many of us enjoy taking our dogs with us on trips. This usually involves taking our dogs with us in our cars, trucks, and SUVs. An innocuous trip can quickly turn into a life-threatening one if it is not done properly. Proper car safety is essential for both human and canine passengers. Dogs that are not safe in cars can cause serious injuries. This is something emergency veterinarians are very familiar with. This includes riding on the driver’s lap, riding with the head out of the window or riding inside the vehicle without proper restraint. Dogs can be killed by irbags It’s tempting to place your small dog on your lap as you drive. They love snuggling and are adorable. How much harm could it do to have your Maltese or Chihuahua six-pounds ride on your lap? Your airbag will likely deploy if you are involved in an accident. Your airbag is designed to protect you during an accident. The force of an airbag could cause serious injury to your small dog if it is in your lap. Small dogs can sustain injuries such as fractures and paralysis from spinal cord trauma. Use safety belts and car carriers to secure your dog Car safety harnesses have a different design to walking harnesses. They are more durable and have a wider range of padded straps. These straps keep your dog safe in an emergency and keep him in one place in the car. This helps to keep him from distracting you as you drive. Nancy Kerns. Photo Dogs that are not controlled can become projectiles in an accident. Head trauma is common from being thrown into a windshield. Small dogs being thrown out of the driver’s window in an accident is another common scenario that emergency veterinarians see. This occurs when the driver rolls down the window and the small dog stands in the driver’s lap, their paws on it. The small dog may fly out of the window and land on their heads on the pavement below during an accident. This injury can often lead to traumatic brain injury and sudden death. A dog should be secured in a travel carrier that is designed for planes or cars. This will ensure the dog’s safety. WDJ has a review of safety harnesses for dog cars starting in April 2021. A car seat that is designed for dogs may be used by small dogs who have been strapped into a safety harness. WDJ has a review on small-dog car seat from May 2021 here. Protect Your Windows from Injuries Even though large dogs are more comfortable riding in the back, air bags can still be used to protect them. However, open windows can cause injury. Flying debris can cause eye and/or ear injury to dogs who ride with their heads out of the window. Unrestrained dogs can also fall out of moving vehicles’ windows. Unrestrained dogs can inflict a fracture on a limb if they crash into the pavement. After a dog leapt out of the rear window, emergency veterinarians have seen instances where the owner has accidentally backed over the dog. A dog car window guard or screen can be installed on the rear windows of your vehicle to protect your pet. BreezeGuard offers wire mesh panels made of welded steel, which are customized to fit your vehicle’s rear windows. The Skeeter Beater offers screens made of polyester mesh fabric. Luno also has them. The Skeeter Beater screens attach to your window frame using sewn in magnets. Luno’s screens fit like a glove over your vehicle’s rear doors frame. When installed, all of the screens and panels will allow normal operation of your vehicle’s windows. Accidents can occur when we least expect them. Do not let poor car safety ruin your trip!
