Octopath Traveler 2 (PC) - Part 9: No Truth But Power (Hikari Chapter 1)

We may have a full party now, but there are still three more characters out there somewhere, so let's go south of Oresrush to recruit our warrior hero Hikari! Hikari's path actions are Challenge (during the day) which lets you fight NPCs for XP and learn new techniques, and Bribe (at night), which lets you pay NPCs money for information (like Osvald's Scrutinize or Temenos's Coerce, but with a monetary cost).

While his Octopath 1 counterpart Olberic had lost his purpose in the events leading up to his journey and spent his journey trying to rediscover it, Hikari had his purpose set in stone from the very beginning; to reclaim his kingdom and bring peace to the world. Olberic also couldn't learn new techniques from Challenging NPCs like Hikari can.

In Chapter 1 of Hikari's story, we see him and his fellow Ku soldiers Ritsu and Rai Mei engaged in a heated battle against an enemy army. When they find and defeat the enemy general, Hikari decides to spare his life, but his brother, General Mugen, finishes him off and scolds Hikari for his weakness. Three years later, Hikari is enjoying a newfound era of peace in Ku's castle town, befriending the common folk, when his father, King Jigo, comes to him with the announcement that he wants Hikari to be the next King of Ku, agreeing more with his desire for peace than Mugen's unslakable bloodlust.

Later that night, Hikari hears of a plot by Mugen to start another war, but it turned out to be a trap! Hikari doesn't meet with Mugen at the top of the hill, but instead meets with his former friend Ritsu, who had fallen in with Mugen and his philosophy and tries to kill Hikari while at the same time Mugen kills the king and takes the throne for himself. His first act as new king of Ku is to set the kingdom ablaze for supporting Hikari over him and neutralize any possible threat to his rule. After besting Ritsu yet again, Hikari rushes to the castle, only for King Mugen to brand him a traitor and exile him. Now, Hikari must seek out his allies from the past and return to Ku to take back his kingdom!
