The 5th near miss (near collision) of major airplanes on US runways occurred in Portland (PDX) when a UPS heavy was cleared for takeoff as another UPS was about to land. The plane taking off aborted and the plane on final went around.

The planes came within 400 feet, one flying directly over the top of the other. The incident is identical to one last week in Burbank, CA and another less than a month ago in Austin, TX.

Fortunately, the controller was able to direct the flight on approach to go around and ordered the departing flight to abort the takeoff, narrowly avoiding certain disaster. There were no injuries... this, the FIFTH time in 2023.
