Sources state that House Speaker McCarthy intends to meet Taiwan’s president in US

According to two sources who spoke with Reuters on Monday, U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has scheduled a meeting with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen in the United States in the upcoming weeks, potentially replacing the Republican Speaker’s planned, yet sensitive, trip to the island nation, Reuters reported.

The insiders, who requested anonymity, disclosed that during her stopover in California on a scheduled trip to Central America, Tsai was invited to give a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, and that McCarthy is expected to meet her in the United States.

According to one of the sources, if the meeting in the United States takes place, which is expected to occur in April, it would not necessarily preclude McCarthy from visiting Taiwan at a later time.

The Financial Times first reported the plans to meet in California.
