Not long after starting the 2023 NBA All-Star game, fresh controversy arose in Ja’s life when incidents from last summer reared their ugly head and made for some salacious headlines -- including the threatening of a security guard and beating up a 17-year-old kid. For starters, Memphis police were called to a local mall in July of 2022 after Morant and a group of nine people confronted an employee at a Finish Line sporting goods store who had entered into a dispute with Ja’s mother. When the director of mall security arrived on the scene, Ja and his friends refused to leave the parking lot. The police showed up and the ensuing verbal confrontation escalated to the point that someone in Ja’s camp allegedly pushed the security director in the head. Then, just as Ja was finally leaving the premises, the police quoted him as having said: “Let me find out what time he gets off.” Coupled with the assault on his person, the Director of Security took this statement as a threat on his life and filed a police report but no arrests were ever made. Things wouldn’t work out quite as smoothly a week later when Morant was hosting a pickup game at his family home.
