BEFORE he’d become the shining star of his self-created “Afro-rave” scene, the performer known as Rema [REM-AH] was born Divine Ikubor on May 1st 2000 to a family with deep roots in their hometown of Benin City, Nigeria. Benin City is a deeply spiritual place and Rema might very well be the best modern-day ambassador the region has to offer. One of Rema’s local heroes growing up was the late Victor Uwaifo, a notable highlife artist whose son Rema would later work with to produce his hit song, “Calm Down”. But at this point in his story that’s a way off in the future because Rema’s childhood was decidedly not easy. A self-described rough kid who grew up loud and talkative, Rema began rapping and singing at the age of eight after absorbing the music of his parents and siblings. Without a musical device of his own -- or the money to purchase one -- he was beholden to the whims of his family members. His mother loved gospel music, while his sister enjoyed pop stars such as Michael Jackson, WizKid, and Drake. Then there was his brother who used to listen to local artists like Burna Boy and Davido. Finally, came his father who relaxed to the sounds of legends like Osayomore
