BEFORE Matt McClung would steal the show over the NBA All-Star Weekend by earning himself three perfect scores out of four in the Dunk Contest, he was born January 6th, 1999 in a hospital at Kingsport, Tennessee and from that very first moment of his life, Matt has been battling to prove himself. Seconds after arriving in the delivery room, the doctors realized that the umbilical cord was wrapped around Matt’s neck and cutting off the oxygen to his brain. His father, Marcus, a former football player at Virginia Tech, could only watch helplessly as his son came into this world, still, lifeless, and blue. Thankfully, the doctors were able to clear the obstructions and Matt pulled through.
After that eventful night, Matt’s family returned to their home in Gate City, Virginia, a mountain town with a population of just over 2,000 about a mile from the Tennessee border. It’s the type of town that’s 95 percent white and 85 percent registered Republican. You know, the kind of small place, where Friday nights are specially reserved for high-school football and nearly everyone in town always shows up to watch the home game.
