On January 29th, 2023, the Grizzlies battled the Pacers in Memphis and managed to hang on for a 112-110 win. During the course of that game, Ja Morant’s father, Tee, and Ja’s close friend, Davonte Pack, engaged in a very fiery back and forth with a number of Pacers players. The end result is, Ja’s friend was escorted off the floor and removed from the arena. Then came what happened post-game and everything got worse. As the Pacers were loading themselves onto their team bus, an SUV that was reportedly carrying Morant and his entourage drove past the Pacers bus while shining a red laser on members of the Indiana team. One Pacer’s security person was later quoted as saying: “That’s 100 percent a gun.” Only – there’s a decent chance it wasn’t. Following this incident, the NBA launched an investigation into what happened, including reviewing video footage -- and they could not corroborate the allegation. Thus, no punishment was given outside of Ja stating that his friend Davonte was banned from attending another home game in the Fed-Ex Forum for a year. The league promised to re-open the investigation if new information came to light, but this appears to be a closed case. This is good for Ja because now he’s got a whole other kettle of fish to deal with.
