CAUSES OF SWOLLEN LIPS AND HOW TO TREAT

Common Causes of Swollen Lips

Allergic Reaction:
Food: Eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy
Medications: Penicillin, lisinopril, Stop the medication and contact your healthcare provider
Material: Cosmetics: Stop using
Insect bites

If you have shortness of breath or tightening of the throat call 911 or your local emergency number.

There is no cure for food allergies but you can prevent allergic reactions by avoiding the things you are allergic to.

If you’re having a mild allergic reaction you can take diphenhydramine: Benadryl.

Oral Allergy Syndrome
Is caused by minor reactions to some raw fruits and vegetables. A contact allergy only affects the part of the mouth the allergen has touched.
Angioedema: develops due to an allergy such as an allergy to a common medication called lisinopril
You may also develop a raised itchy rash called hives
Pimples near the lip can cause the lip to swell
Skin infection: Cellulitis
Cold sores: herpes virus
Trauma/Injury: Lip biting, getting hit: Put a cold compress on the lip
Infection of the mouth or gums can cause the lips to swell
Sunburn

RARE:

Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome: that causes swelling in the lips and face, as well as some muscle paralysis.

Treatments:

Stop the offending agent
Apply a cold compress: don’t put ice directly on the lip. This can cause more damage
If it’s a cold sore outbreak use: antiviral cream such as Abreva
For swollen lips caused by inflammation or injury, you can take NSAIDS such as ibuprofen (Advil). Take with food and don’t take if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or kidney disease (decreased kidney function).
